What is product recall management?

Product recall management is the coordinated process of preparing for, executing, and learning from corrective actions for unsafe or defective products.

More than the recall announcement

A recall is not a single communication event. Effective management begins before a defect is discovered and continues after the immediate corrective action is complete.

Three phases

  1. Pre-recall: readiness, task-force governance, guidelines, training, mock recalls, tracing, safety, and quality control.
  2. Recall: problem identification, risk assessment, the recall decision, planning, stakeholder communication, execution, monitoring, documentation, and reporting.
  3. Post-recall: performance recovery and organizational learning.

A stakeholder process

Consumers are central, but manufacturers must also coordinate with retailers and wholesalers, regulators, suppliers, media, investors, and other stakeholders.
